# API and agent tools

Read the public GIS directory from your own scripts or AI assistant. All catalog interfaces are free to read and require no account or API key.

## Download the catalog

Fetch [tools.json](<https://gisforweb.com/tools.json>) for active tool records, categories, features, project sources and canonical profile URLs. Read the [OpenAPI specification](<https://gisforweb.com/openapi.json>) for the response format.

```
curl https://gisforweb.com/tools.json
```

## Connect an MCP client

Add `https://gisforweb.com/mcp` as a remote Streamable HTTP server. It provides two read-only tools:

- `search_gis_tools` — search by words, category or open-source status. Optional inputs: `query`, `category`, `openSource`, `limit` (1–50; default 10) and `offset` (default 0).

- `get_gis_tool` — read the full public profile for a `slug` returned by search.

The tools read directory records. They cannot submit tools, subscribe people, change data or access private information. Browser agents can use the same operations on browsers that support WebMCP.

## Read pages as Markdown

Send `Accept: text/markdown` with a request for a content page. Tool profiles and developer guides also have direct Markdown links.

```
curl -H 'Accept: text/markdown' https://gisforweb.com/tools/maplibre/
```

Start with [the agent index](<https://gisforweb.com/llms.txt>) or [the GIS research skill](<https://gisforweb.com/.well-known/agent-skills/find-gis-tools/SKILL.md>).

## Access and content policy

Search and use in AI answers are allowed. Model training is disallowed. See [robots.txt](<https://gisforweb.com/robots.txt>) and [agent access instructions](<https://gisforweb.com/auth.md>).

Directory descriptions are summaries. Consult official project sources for current pricing, capabilities and licenses. An alternative may replace only one part of a larger platform.
